Responsible Pet Ownership: A Big Glass of Perspective

For all those people who can't keep their dog because they are getting a divorce, moving to a place that "doesn't allow pets", and are going to "have" to take their pet to a pound because the kids no longer play with it, etc...

This woman has been through a 9.0 earthquake, a killer tsunami, a nuclear power plant that is emitting radiation, has nowhere to live, is hungry, is cold, and she STILL HAS HER DOG!!!!!!

  1. Good post!!! I personally would live in a cardboard box before I could get rid of my dog, cat or horses.
Also, Molly Macaroni looks like my Lily Beagle! (I actually found your site because of a comment you left on a post of mine - about Lily Beagle- quite some time ago.)
    Take care!

  2. There are times when a pet - even one who is beloved- cannot be kept. "Moving" is a euphemism for many things that have nothing to do with a new home.

It can mean your child has just been diagnosed with leukemia, and your entire life is now spent in the hospital beside her, or rushing to the hospital in the middle of the night, or spending a day hoping it will just be "just" a normal day- with the husband you never see, because he is working to pay for that, and everything else you once took for granted...

It's the loss of your house, because your son makes bad choices, and you trusted him enough to co-sign a loan, and now you're living in an apartment where the dog is not welcome but you can walk to work so you can keep your job, and which you now have at the age of 71.

It's your mother calling to tell you your father has just had a massive stroke, and she doesn't know where he keeps anything, or what bills to pay, and you already have a full time job...

It is a granddaughter who thought if she sat in the car while the father of her two babies robbed banks, she was not committing a crime...and now instead of an occasional visit, you are round the clock with a 4 month old and a three year old- in your seventies- and no way of keeping your dog and the babies safe in a tiny rented house...

No, moving means so many things that don't mean another home, and we cannot say "it will never happen to me". If you haven't seen it yet, you will. Never really doesn't exist...

The one thing that must happen, is that we must always be there to pick up the pieces, rescue not only the dogs but the people whose hearts are being broken, as they leave a dog off with someone they've never met, only knowing they won't see them again and they've made the best choice of those that have been given. Sometimes, that is doing your best.

Please just understand - it isn't always that simple, and a lot of choices are made for you, no matter how responsible you are, or how much you love your dog.
